The aim of the session is to make children explore and visualise how an abacus will help to know various place value and to make the children to understand about the two types of number systems. It is demonstrated using various materials to explicate how the place value system works.

  • Children listened to the introduction avidly
  • Children interrogated as follows

1. How many spikes were used?

2. Maximum how many beads can be added to a spike?

3. How many groups are there in the Indian system?

4. Where to insert commas in the International system? 

5. How many places are there in Indian and International system?

6. How many periods are there in Indian and International system?

7. How to read the numbers in Indian and International system?

8. How to compare the Indian and international system?

  • Elucidated the concepts and it created interest among the children to acquaint the concept.
  • Children were enthusiastic and were very articulate about the usage of abacus kit.
  • Elucidated the concepts and it created interest among the children to acquaint many new things to their level.
  • Made them touch and feel the beads in abacus and place value flash cards.
  • Lab kit Abacus material and charts for flash cards were used for the activities.
  • A demo was given before the activity.
  • Materials used: Flash cards, Number cards, Place value and face value chart.
  • Learning outcomes:

This activity will help the children to read and write the numbers in Indian and International system.  They will understand the difference between the place value and face value of the digits.  They can able to compare the two types of number systems.
